The inaugural Ramadhan Cup Competition was played between the two favourites Onq & Keighley RZM. Like previous league fixtures & cup competitions, the expectations were extremely high, however, it proved to be the opposite. Onq produced the goods on the day & out classed the current Premier Section table toppers in every department. Onq Looked in a winning mood, determined to make their league rivals, and consistent competitors a run for their money. Guess what? They sure did!
Keighley won the toss and elected to bat first. Losing Gulsheraz in the first over was certainly the main blow for Keighley RZM. And from that point onwards, RZM couldn’t really gain any momentum whatsoever. A great piece of bowling from Jahangir Liaqat, who helped his team restrict RZM to a low score of 71 all out was crucial. Picking the wickets of Opening Batsmen and Skipper Waleed Akhtar, Youngster Danish Hussain and all-rounder Zafar Iqbal alongside. Assistance from M Shah who also picked up 3 wickets for 14 runs, made it extremely difficult for RZM to bat their complete 18 overs.
In reply Onq wasted no time in chasing down a score with the loss of three wickets, which by RZM’s standard was very poor. A blistering 37 by Fahid Rahman, who smashed 16 runs from Iqbal Khan’s one over, certainly proved that Onq made their intentions very clear what they really intended to do. Excellent all round performance in the final, clearly means there is only going to be one Champion… Yes – It was only going to be Onq. Shah’s 3 for 14, Fahid’s 37 were exceptional performances, however Jhangir’s 3 for 6 earned him the 2017 Ramadhan cup final Man of the Match award, presented by Mark Arthur (YCCC Chief Executive).
